Where did the name “The 5th Earl Market” come from?

The name was inspired by the legend of a certain gambling nobleman in the eighteenth century. Late one night in 1762, in the middle of an intense card game in London, hunger struck John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792). Rather than interrupt his game with the belabored act of sitting down to a formal meal, the Earl ordered a waiter to bring him meat and cheese between two slices of bread—a culinary configuration to keep his fingers from getting greasy, thereby allowing him to continue gambling with his snack in one hand and his cards in the other. And from that incident, we have inherited that piéce de resistance we now know as the Sandwich.
